While not knowing what would motivate Steve Bannon to call up one of the most veteran reporters from the liberal left point of view, it appears that he did just that. Mr. Bannon’s assistant emailed Robert Kuttner of the Prospect, and asked if Kuttner would be willing to talk.
Thus begins a long on the record discussion between one of America’s leading reporters who leans left with the man who is quite probably the leading political media master mind on the right.
I wonder how much of what was said by Bannon is an attempt to sway action and focus, and how much was an honest discussion with someone who could be viewed with respect.
Some interesting highlight quotes by Bannon:
There’s no military solution [to North Korea’s nuclear threats], forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.
Ethno-nationalism—it’s losers. It’s a fringe element… These guys are a collection of clowns.
If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.
By offering some reasonable thoughts on topics like North Korea, or denouncing components of the White Nationalists who he has been a major driving factor in empowering – Bannon then adds in things like the third quote which could be a true assessment or it could be a play to try to get the left to change focus off something that is resonating across the country.
“Either the reports of the threats to Bannon’s job are grossly exaggerated and leaked by his rivals, or he has decided not to change his routine and to go down fighting.”
Whatever it is – it is very fascinating.
